Testing Section
History
Since 2007, gay and bisexual men have been able to get tested for HIV anonymously and at low cost at Mann-O-Meter, following a preliminary consultation. Mann-O-Meter was thus the first organisation for gay men in Germany to include the rapid HIV test in its services within a low-threshold setting.
Gradually, the service was expanded to include further tests for other sexually transmitted infections. In addition, testing hours have been significantly extended since then. Gay and bisexual men, as well as trans* M*SM*, can now get tested five days a week.
Testing Services Today
As well as HIV, users can be tested for syphilis, hepatitis C, gonorrhoea (‘the clap’) and chlamydia. On request, we can check immunity to hepatitis A and B. We also offer all the necessary tests for PrEP and refer users to physicians' offices for a prescription. Visitors wishing to be tested at the Mann-O-Meter are first briefed by a volunteer on the various testing options, the procedure and the estimated time required. They are asked to complete a questionnaire first. Among other things, this asks about situations involving a risk of HIV infection. The questionnaire encourages participants to reflect on their own behaviour and forms the basis for the pre-test counselling session, which is conducted at the Mann-O-Meter by experienced therapists and/or psychologists. During the counselling session, participants have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have and to discuss their approach to safer sex. If necessary, information on the transmission routes of HIV and other STIs is also provided during the counselling session.
Most of the men tested via the Mann-O-Meter are well informed about HIV and know the ways to prevent transmission (condoms, PrEP, TasP). However, some repeatedly find themselves in situations where they do not protect themselves to the extent they would expect of themselves. This is where the counsellor steps in to support them and work with the user to find personalised strategies.
This specialised setting makes it possible to reach gay and bisexual men, as well as trans* M*SM*, in a more effective and personalised way for prevention purposes than through printed leaflets or information on the internet and social media.
Mann-O-Meter’s testing service thus makes it possible to diagnose HIV infections as early as possible. Men affected can therefore find out about treatment options at an early stage and protect themselves and others. Participants are also given the opportunity to discuss their sexuality and any related issues in a confidential setting. They are supported in developing their own solutions to achieve a fulfilling and health-conscious sex life.
